eComics

eComic” stands for ‘electronic comic‘, ‘electronic comic book‘ or ‘electronic comic strip‘, which can take full advantage of self-publishing technology.

It is an exciting, easy to manage, share and monetize format of product–which allows any creator with minimal knowledge, to share what they have created with the world across the internet or by other digital means. It is also becoming a fast expanding form of business, providing income streams for veterans and novices alike.

An eComic has many forms, adaptable to personal style, preferance and market target–with today’s technology keeping eComics in an ever-evolving state, such as Amazons ‘Kindle’ reader.

The original “eComic” was a comic book created in the traditional pen & ink, then scanned pages were placed online for viewing or download. This is still a common practice with popular and independent comic strips, though the larger, more popular comic book companies such as Marvel have created formats and used technology to keep an ever tightening grip on their creations.

eComics are a unique medium, in that they provide independent creators an equal opportunity when it comes to available technology, low to non-existent overhead, zero printing costs and world wide exposure, again through the internet. This has opened even greater opportunities to readers–by providing unlimited storylines, characters and fresh adventures, beyond what’s available through normal printed sources.

Comic books, graphic novels, and other cartoon illustrated works, have found this special niche in attracting not only youth, but adults as well–who are taking to this new technology readily. Comics like WANTED:HERO, which have started and fed an evolution in online graphic entertainment, by providing a traditional comic book in ‘digital’ form, to download and enjoy for mere pennies, compared to costly printed formats.

VIEWS ON eCOMICS

Opinions on the validity, usage and future of eComics are debated widely, from Marvel Comics to Steven King, Jeff Smith (of Bone) to independent creators who have already seen the potential (and profits) of this medium.

What fuels the fire, is the expanding knowledge and experience being shared by the independent creators, such as Jaime Buckley (the creator of WANTED:HERO) who started teaching both basic and advanced methods of creating and monetizing eComics in 2004-2005, before the growing tends or advanced readers such as ‘Kindle’ existed.  At one point, more than 15,000 kids a week tuned into the WANTED:HERO message boards and podcasts to learn about eComics, with many new creators appearing online withing weeks.

There is a growing need for artists and creators, to stand up and share their talents through eComics. Talent which has been held back due to the erroneous belief that one must be well known to succeed in the field of comics. This could not be further from the truth–and one of the main reasons why eComics are now a powerful alternative to conventional comic books.

eComics 3 largest advantages are:

  • Your previous work experience or degrees are irrelevant–you simply need the tools, knowledge and a little talent.
  • You have complete control of projects.
  • eComics can be created for very little expense.

It’s not about posting or creating ‘trash’–things that offend a good mind and heart—but rather posting decent, sound, correct principles, that offend those who simply want to ’shock’. This is a time when creators can and should share their quality works with the public, to say what needs to be said and help those in the communities around the world. There are many voices on the internet seeking to be heard, and eComics are a perfect vehicle.
